100 W CO2 laser system for nanoparticles synthesis by condensation from the gas phase
The system is equipped with a vacuum chamber with ZnSe window for the CO2 laser beam. The evaporation of material is provided by focusing the laser beam on the rotating target. The size of particles is controlled by background gas pressure during evaporation (typically 0.1-10 Torr O2 for oxides).
Examples of research performed using this instrument: Preparation of ZrO2, HfO2, Al2O3, ZnO, and MgO nanoparticles for calorimetry and spectroscopy.
400 W CO2 laser system for thermal analysis, calorimetry, and samples synthesis
The system is equipped with a melting stage, aerodynamic levitator, and spectropyrometer. Sample preparation from oxide powders performed by melting powder in the hearth, and in aerodynamic levitator.
Drop-n-Catch (DnC) calorimeter employs splittable nozzle allowing to drop levitated laser heated sample into calorimeter at room temperature, or to splat quench the melt with solid copper blocks.
Examples of research performed using this instrument: Thermal analysis above 2000 C, samples preparation for high temperature diffraction, fusion enthalpy measurements on ZrO2, HfO2, YSZ, Yb2O3, Lu2O3
